In 2013, as the new editor in chief at Boston Magazine, I met a young reporter named Susan Zalkind, who was investigating whether her friend’s murder—part of a savage triple homicide a few years earlier—was tied to the Boston Marathon bombers, and whether law enforcement agents were covering up the connection. That reporting led to a groundbreaking series of articles and national media attention, a unique collaboration with This American Life, and a decade-long odyssey by Susan that culminated in her 2022 Hulu documentary The Murders Before the Marathon, named after our 2014 cover story.
